Getting to Know Coach Madeline Harms

Sandlot Half Marathon-First Place female with 192 laps around a baseball diamond!

What do you love about being a coach?

I love helping people achieve their goals and accomplish things they didn't know were possible.

Who is your ideal athlete?

I enjoy coaching athletes with all sorts of personalities and life circumstances, and jive best with athletes who are open-minded and enjoy the training process.

How does a custom training plan help an athlete meet their goal?

Every athlete differs in their running background, life circumstances, and personality. By developing a custom plan, we can account for these individual factors, and even more importantly, adjust the plan as inevitable hiccups arise. I believe this is especially relevant for ultras, as there are so many different skills involved (speed endurance, fatigue resistance, nutrition, trail running technique, to name a few), and individual athletes will need more development in some areas vs. others.

What is your why?

My why for coaching is to help people achieve their goals and reset their expectations. It's incredibly rewarding!

What's your favorite race and why?

That's a tough one! The most scenic course I've run is the Never Summer 100k. One of my favorite races to go to is Kettle 100, I've volunteered there twice and ran the 100 mile in 2022. The community and atmosphere there is so awesome!

What is your proudest running accomplishment?

Probably completing the Kettle 100 mile in 2022, 11 months after my daughter was born. I had to work through some really rough patches but was able to hang in there to finish!

What else would you like to share about yourself?

For my "day job" I'm a College Psychology Professor, specializing in Child/adolescent development!
